Great teams aren’t born, they are built.
They are built one person, one commitment at a time.
In my new book coming out soon I share the 7 Commitments every leader and team must make if they want to be great!
One of these 7 commitments is the commitment to GET BETTER.
I know this is common sense since every team must improve if they want to be great and yet so many teams allow success and/or complacency to keep them from getting better.
They don’t have a culture of continuous improvement. They don’t challenge the status quo. They don’t challenge each other to get better. And they don’t ask the right questions in order to get better.
John Madden said “Winning is a great deodorant. It covers up what stinks about your team.”
So often when you are having success you bask in your achievements and become complacent instead of looking for ways to improve. Because you are enjoying successful outcomes you don’t look for or see the underlying issues that stink about your team and because you don’t deal with these issues, they often become a liability at the worst possible time in the future.
Once the winning turns to losing and profits turn to losses then you start identifying the issues but it’s often too late.
The key is to create a culture of continuous improvement by asking three simple questions every day. You can ask these questions after meetings, product launches, events, games, promotions, musical performances, surgeries, etc. Every team can ask these questions, and every team can commit to getting better.
- What did we do well?
- What can we do better?
- What did we learn that will make us better?
They are simple but powerful and when every team member reflects on these questions and the team collectively identifies issues and solutions and actions you will see incremental changes leading to explosive long term growth.
In The 7 Commitments of a Great Team I share these three questions and also teach you a proven tool to challenge your team members effectively in order to get better together.
Let’s not let winning or losing cause us to stink! Let’s commit to getting better today!
