Coaching at the highest level isn’t just about drills, strategy, or physical conditioning—it’s about connection. Craig Boynton, one of the most respected minds in tennis, has worked with some of the world’s best, including Jim Courier, John Isner, Hubert Hurkacz and other world class players. But if you ask him what really fuels success, his answer is simple: it’s all about the player.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the player. And if you ever get confused, just go back to rule number one.”

That philosophy has shaped his career, with most of his coaching relationships lasting years—because at the end of the day, trust and understanding are the foundation for greatness.

The Balance Between Hardware & Software

Boynton sees player development as a mix of hardware (physical abilities) and software (mindset, decision-making, and approach to the game).

“If you want to be successful on the tour, if you want to break into the top 50, it’s about what you do freakishly well.”

He lets the matches dictate what needs work—because in high-performance sport, it’s the combination of skill, strategy, and mental toughness that separates the best from the rest.

Using Data to Cut Through the Noise

When a player pushes back or doubts a strategy, Boynton doesn’t argue—he shows them the numbers.

“If there’s a disconnect… then you bring in data. Feelings can lie, but the numbers don’t.”

Technology has changed the game, making it easier to track trends, measure progress, and show players exactly what’s working and what needs to change. And when an athlete sees hard proof, that’s when real breakthroughs happen.

Keeping Joy in the Journey

With all the pressure that comes with professional tennis, it’s easy to forget why players started in the first place—because they love the game. Boynton makes sure his athletes never lose sight of that.

“We do this for fun, and you have to keep the joy in it. You’re going to play better if you’re happy and smiling.”

Celebrating victories—big or small—is part of the process. Whether it’s a simple high-five after a great training session or taking a player to a high-end wine shop after a tournament win, finding ways to keep the experience fun and rewarding makes a difference.

The Power of Team & Fan Energy

As players rise through the ranks, their team dynamics become even more important. Everyone—coaches, trainers, mental performance experts—has a role to play.

“It’s important that everyone dovetails together, stays in their lane, and works seamlessly for the athlete.”

And when it comes to competing under pressure, Boynton has an unconventional but powerful trick: play for the people who believe in you.

“Pick out someone in the crowd, play for that person that’s cheering for you. The energy will come back to you 10 to 100 fold—it just might be the difference between getting the W or not.”

What Coaches & Athletes Can Take Away

  • Success starts with relationships. Building trust leads to better coaching and stronger players.
  • There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Each athlete needs a personalized development plan that plays to their strengths.
  • Data is your best friend. If a player isn’t convinced, show them the hard numbers.
  • Joy fuels performance. The best players know how to balance hard work with celebration.
  • Harness the energy around you. Fans, teammates, and support systems can push you through tough moments.

At the core of it all, Boynton understands that coaching isn’t just about improving skills—it’s about unlocking the full potential of an athlete.

“Your assets determine how big your house is. Your liabilities determine how many houses—and the zip codes they’re in.”
