Few of us will ever play in a World Cup. But every one of us can learn from the teamwork, resilience, and joy that great sport brings. Sunday’s final reminded us that the best lessons in sports (and life) are more than the final score.

Here are our top takeaways:

1.      Championships Are Won Together: Spain demonstrated what happens when a team is cohesive and plays as one. They were disciplined, determined, and dominated with and without the ball. Their performance underscored the power of one of our favorite sayings that “teamwork makes the dream work”.

2.      Winning Teams Need Everyone: Spain’s Ferran Torres entered the final as a substitute in the 62nd minute. He scored the game’s only goal in the 106th minute during extra time. He was able to do this via an assist from another substitute Nico Williams. In a world where everyone wants to be a “starter”, Spain’s World Cup win proved again that victory requires a total team approach.

3.      When Sport Unites the World: For a few weeks, everyone in the U.S. seemed to be a soccer fan. Bagpipers played in Boston when thousands of Scottish soccer fans traveled to the city to support their national team. Norway’s Viking Row was done everywhere because of the squad’s unexpected and fearless run, its chemistry, and the Viking aura and likability of superstar striker Erling Haaland. We forgot our differences, came together, and celebrated the effort, excellence, and excitement of sports.

4.      One Final Lesson from Messi: Of course, we must mention the legendary Lionel Messi of Argentina, the defending champions, who was an outstanding leader and teammate throughout the tournament. In a message before the finals, he acknowledged the joy of the journey and “getting back up in difficult moments and enjoying every step.” We all can learn from his resilience and gratitude.
