Knicks MVP Jalen Brunson has provided a master class for athletes everywhere on essentials that make the difference for individuals and teams, specifically:

Respect: Brunson treats each play with respect and care. That allowed him (6-4 wingspan) to beat San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama (8-foot wingspan) by shooting over him from deep. He scored 45 points in the definitive Game 5 of the NBA Championship.

Teamwork: He passed on an additional $113 million in guaranteed cash the summer of 2024 so the Knicks would have the money to spend on talent necessary to win Game 5.

Competitiveness: After two college championships at Villanova, he was not drafted until the second round—a fact that has fueled his competitive drive. He said that “if you do fail, you’re going to learn anyway.”

Finding a way: Even Walt Frazier thought Brunson would have trouble in the playoffs against taller opponents but noted that he always found a way. He said, “His game is right between the ears.”

Good sportsmanship: His first act after the championship game ended was to hug the opposing coach. His opponents did not demonstrate similar good sportsmanship.

Believing in the work: When interviewed about how he managed to defy the odds, he referenced the work including over the summer when there are no crowds or formal competition. He said, “I don’t need everyone to believe in me. I just need to believe in my work.” One writer described it as Brunson’s “daily urge to be great.”

We’re curious about what fuels your “daily urge to be great” and how you have overcome the odds. Email us at inspiration@sportfuelslife.com with your thoughts so we can share and help inspire others, just like Jalen Brunson.
